Over the past few days, there have been a bunch of rumours doing the rounds that suggest that the Overwatch League intends to take a year-long hiatus, amid concerns around Overwatch 2's release plans.
Season 5 of the OWL, which should take place in 2022, was expected to be the first year that the league would be played on Overwatch 2, but with rumours surrounding the launch plans of Overwatch 2 suggesting that the game is still a while off, as the team grapples with hero balance, there has been a report that claimed the OWL would start much later than usual in 2022, approximately a year after the conclusion of Season 4 later this year.
That rumour however, has since been shut down by the Overwatch League's vice-president Jon Spector, who put out a tweet addressing the claims.
"It's really not practical to respond to every rumor about our future plans, but in this case this story is inaccurate," said Spector. "We have not set nor communicated dates about our 2022 season yet but do not plan to take a 'year-long hiatus' in any scenario we are considering currently."
Considering there is still no information about when Overwatch 2 will launch, it's likely that the next season of the Overwatch League will have to be played on the original game, if it does intend to start at the usual time period of spring.
