Overwatch League using digital stage for Grand Finals

As a way to conform to safe social distancing guidelines, the event will use cloud technology to stream players onto a LAN-type stage.

The Overwatch League Grand Finals start very, very soon, and whilst it will be a little different to previous years, Activision Blizzard has worked hard to try to preserve the grand stage, Finals are known for.

To that extent, the Overwatch League Grand Finals will be played on a digital stage that utilises cloud technology and a series of cameras, set up in player's rooms, to bring the magic of LAN to life, even in the middle of a global pandemic. The Overwatch League Twitter showed a tease of the stage here.

Each of the four teams competing over the next few days have travelled to Asia, to be able to play across the same server during the event. This means the Finals are not being broadcast at the usual time slot, starting at 8pm BST, and will instead be live as soon as midday today in the UK.

The Call of Duty League used a level of this cloud technology during its Championship Weekend, with only the broadcast talent using the system, and not the players. For the Overwatch League, this will be vice-versa, as talent will still be shown from the comfort of their own homes.
